Plum Cake-A Part of the Christmas Tradition

Christmastime reminds everybody of the tantalizing aroma of rich the plum cake, which is one of the English traditions people have embraced as their own. What started out, as the plum porridge has become a delicious concoction of dried fruits, honey, spices, and a wide variety of other fantastic ingredients. Originally, on Christmas Eve people used to eat porridge after fasting through the day. Later on, the porridge gave way to the tradition of eating the Christmas pudding. Later on, during the 16th century, the use of oatmeal no longer remained in vogue and now the revised preparation consisted of eggs, butter, and wheat flour besides the original ingredients.
With the addition of these new ingredients, the preparation begins to hold its shape with more firmness than before, and this ultimately became the origin of the Christmas cake. During this time, however, it was in the form of a boiled variety of the present day avatar. Families that could afford an oven during this time used to add marzipan and paste of almond sugar as a part of Easter festivities. Eastern spices brought to the English shores by the sailors became part of the cakes during Christmas time and it got the name CHRISTMAS CAKE from then on.
The modern day cake varieties use candied chopped fruits, nuts, and dried fruits, along with spices generally soaked in different fruit juices. After baking, heavy garnishing and decoration of the cakes occur with icing. Bakers may use different methods in order to prepare the Christmas cake, but in general, these are nothing but a special variation of the classic fruitcakes. It can be moist, light, dark, leavened, dry, spongy, heavy, or unleavened. You can get them in myriad shapes, having dusting, glazing, or frostings. Confectioners may use sugar glazing on it, or even served plain.
The preparation of Christmas cake turns into a joyous event where you can come across ceremonies related to cake mixing. Preparations begin well in advance to ensure the best experience for those who partake of it as a part of the celebrations. The ingredients to be used in the cake are mixed thoroughly with liquor and wine. Preparation starts with enough time on hand so that the ingredients are able to develop the right taste and aroma. Researchers find the origin of such mixing ceremonies in 17th century England, where it was the harbinger of harvest season in Europe.
People used the plethora of nuts and fruits harvested during this time for preparing delicious Christmas cakes. People used to save pieces of the cake all through the New Year and kept it as a good luck charm. On a more practical side, the high-energy content of the cake made it ideal for withstanding the freezing weather. Whatever it is, this rich preparation made with raisins, glazed dates, candied orange, cherries, prunes, and currants is surely a sumptuous fare. So when it is Christmas time, do not forget to enjoy your plum cake and share the happiness of this delicacy with others too as a part of the original spirit of the HOLIDAY SEASON!
